Mgahinga Gorilla National Park occupies a narrow strip of the Virunga highlands in Uganda’s far southwest, and it holds something no other park in the country can offer — mountain gorillas and golden monkeys sharing the same forest. The gorillas are the Nyakagezi family, the park’s only habituated group.

The golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo zones lower on the volcanic slopes and can be tracked on a standard half-day or observed over a full day through the habituation program. Most itineraries choose one or the other. This one does both.

The first three days are spent in and around Mgahinga, working through two of Uganda’s most distinctive primate encounters on consecutive mornings. Day four shifts northeast to Lake Bunyonyi, a high-altitude lake in Kabale district ringed by steep, cultivated hills and scattered with islands, each carrying its own local history.

It is a genuinely different experience from the forest — open water, birdsong across the surface, and a pace that sits in useful contrast to the exertion of the days before. This 5-day Mgahinga gorilla safari starts and ends in Entebbe.

Day 1 :

Entebbe to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Entebbe and spends a few minutes walking through the itinerary and confirming you have everything you need. If there is gear to pick up before leaving the city, this is the time to do it.

The drive southwest to Mgahinga takes nine to ten hours and earns its keep. The first stop is Mpambire, a workshop village where royal drums have been crafted from wood and animal hide by the same families for generations. It is a short visit, but the scale and craft of the instruments are worth the stop.

The Equator crossing at Kayabwe follows, with the familiar monument and the Coriolis demonstration. Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara is where you stop for lunch, a well-built cultural museum with good food and a reasonable introduction to the kingdoms of western Uganda.

After lunch, the road continues south through the flat lands of Ntungamo before rising into the rolling hills of Kabale and then the steeper, more winding terrain of Kisoro district.

The Virunga volcanoes appear in the distance as you approach. You arrive at the lodge in the early evening with enough time to settle in, eat dinner, and rest before an early start tomorrow.

Day 2 :

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Breakfast is early. Your driver-guide takes you to Mgahinga's park headquarters in time for the morning briefing, where Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers check passports — the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 — and walk the group through the rules, current field conditions, and what to expect in the forest.

With only eight permits issued per day and one gorilla family in the park, the group is small, and the briefing is unhurried.

The Nyakagezi family spent years moving between Uganda and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park before settling more consistently on the Ugandan side of the Virunga slopes. The family is well-habituated and carries an unusual number of silverbacks for a single group, which gives the social dynamics a different quality from what most gorilla encounters produce.

Rather than a single dominant male commanding the scene, the group distributes its weight differently, and watching how that plays out during the hour is genuinely interesting.

The trek itself moves through highland vegetation and bamboo forest on the volcanic slopes. Duration depends on where the family has settled overnight and ranges from thirty minutes to most of the morning.

The terrain is steep in places, and the soil holds moisture, so the trail can be slippery regardless of season. When you locate the family, the hour begins. It passes quickly.

You return to the lodge after the trek for lunch, a certificate, and a quiet afternoon.

Day 3 :

Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga

The morning begins with breakfast and a second transfer to the park headquarters, this time for the golden monkey briefing.

You have two options.

The standard golden monkey trek allows one hour with the habituated group — enough time to observe them at close range in the bamboo forest and take photographs.
The full-day habituation experience extends that time significantly and places you alongside researchers as they work with the animals, offering a more detailed understanding of golden monkey behavior and ecology.

Both are worth considering. The habituation experience costs more and demands a longer, more physically active day, but it is the better choice for anyone with a serious interest in primates.

Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga Massif and are listed as endangered. They inhabit the bamboo zones at a lower altitude than the gorillas, and the trekking terrain reflects that — the slopes are still uneven but generally less demanding than the previous day.

The monkeys move fast and high in the bamboo, which makes following them an active, often unpredictable experience. They feed in large, energetic groups, and the color — a vivid orange-gold against green bamboo — makes them one of the more visually striking primates in East Africa.

You return to the lodge in the afternoon for relaxation, dinner, and a final overnight in the Kisoro area.

Day 4 :

Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and Boat Cruise

After breakfast, the vehicle heads northeast toward Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district. The drive takes two to three hours through the Kigezi highlands, passing the same terraced hills and red clay roads that mark this part of Uganda.

The lake appears as the road crests a ridge above Kabale — a wide expanse of still water, dotted with islands, set into a bowl of steep cultivated slopes.

Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda's deepest lakes and sits at around 1,962 metres above sea level. The boat cruise takes you through the islands, each carrying its own piece of local history.

Among them is Akampene, known as Punishment Island, where young women who became pregnant outside of marriage were abandoned until the mid-twentieth century. The guides share this history directly and without softening. It is worth listening to.

The lake is also an excellent birding destination. Grey crowned cranes, African jacanas, malachite kingfishers, and weavers are all reliable sightings.

For those who prefer to stay on land, the surrounding hills offer walking trails with wide views across the water. The afternoon is yours to spend as you choose.

Day 5 :

Lake Bunyonyi to Entebbe International Airport

The final morning is unhurried. After breakfast, your driver-guide loads the vehicle, and the road north to Entebbe begins. The drive takes the better part of the day, with a lunch stop along the way.

The route retraces the familiar Kabale highlands before flattening out toward Kampala and the lake district around Entebbe.

You arrive at Entebbe International Airport in time for your departure flight. The tour ends at the drop-off.

It costs more and demands more physical effort, but for travelers with a genuine interest in primates or conservation, it is the richer option. If your main priority on this itinerary is the gorilla trek and the lake, the standard trek is the more practical choice.

The itinerary spends three nights in Mgahinga before moving to Lake Bunyonyi. Is that sequence flexible?

The sequence is built around permit logistics. Gorilla and golden monkey trekking permits are date-specific and must be arranged in advance, which means those two days anchor the schedule.

Lake Bunyonyi on Day 4 provides a natural wind-down between the final trek and the long drive back to Entebbe on Day 5.

Reversing the order is possible in theory, but it would require a longer drive on the day before the gorilla trek, which is not ideal given the early morning start. Discuss any changes with your operator at booking.

Lake Bunyonyi is described as Uganda's deepest lake. Can I swim in it?

Lake Bunyonyi is one of the few lakes in Uganda considered safe for swimming, largely because the cool, high-altitude water has historically had very low levels of bilharzia-carrying snails.

That said, conditions can change, and it is worth confirming current local advice with your lodge on arrival.

The Birdnest Resort sits directly on the lake and will have current information. Most guests combine the boat cruise with swimming or kayaking on the same afternoon.

What should I pack for a safari that moves between high-altitude volcanic forest and a lakeside lodge?

For the two forest days in Mgahinga, bring waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, a lightweight rain jacket, and gardening-style gloves for steep or dense sections of trail.

Gaiters are worth adding to keep soil out of your boots on wet ground. The altitude in Mgahinga means mornings are cold — a warm layer is useful before and after the trek.

For Lake Bunyonyi, the pace changes but the altitude remains high, so a fleece or light jacket still earns its place in the bag.
