The road west from Entebbe gradually opens up.

Within the first hour or two, Kampala's suburban edge gives way to tea plantations sweeping across hillsides, roadside markets piled with jackfruit and cassava, and crater lakes appearing in the valleys below.

The drive to Kibale Forest National Park takes most of the day. There is a comfort stop in Fort Portal, a compact highland town with cooler air and a slower pace, before the road narrows and the trees close in.

You arrive at Kibale Forest Lodge in the late afternoon, with time to settle in before dinner. The lodge sits just outside the park boundary.

At night, the sounds of the forest carry clearly across the grounds. An early night makes sense. Tomorrow's tracking starts before the day has warmed up.

• Kibale Forest Lodge (mid-range)

Kibale is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, one of the highest concentrations on the continent, and a morning spent tracking them is rarely predictable.

After a briefing at the park headquarters, you enter the forest with a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger and an experienced guide. The trail moves through mature mahogany and fig trees wrapped in strangler vines. In the low-light understorey, chimpanzees are often heard before they're seen.

A sudden bark, a branch crashing overhead, then the sound of something large moving through the canopy. When you find them, they tend to go about their business with little apparent concern for the humans below.

Beyond the chimpanzees, Kibale is exceptional for birds. The great blue turaco, electric blue-green and roughly the size of a small cat, moves through the treetops with unlikely elegance. Black-and-white casqued hornbills are heard well before they're spotted. The forest rewards those who slow down.

In the afternoon, a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary area offers a chance to understand how communities living alongside one of Uganda's most visited parks actually experience that proximity. It is unhurried and often more memorable than visitors expect.

After breakfast, the drive south from Kibale begins gently. The forest gives way to open savannah as you descend toward Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The road flattens, and the landscape takes on the open, volcanic quality characteristic of this part of western Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth is one of the country's most biologically varied reserves, with open grasslands, dense thicket, crater lakes, and the Kazinga Channel all within a single park boundary.

You arrive in time for lunch at Pumba Safari Cottages, located near Kyambura Gorge, a sunken river-forest channel that shelters an isolated population of chimpanzees.

The afternoon is given over to the Kazinga Channel, a 40-kilometre natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George.

Animals gather here in large numbers. Hippos cluster in the shallows, Nile crocodiles rest motionless on exposed banks, and African fish eagles call from dead trees above the waterline.

For birders, the channel is a reliable destination, with pied kingfishers, yellow-billed storks, and goliath herons regularly seen. You return to the lodge as the afternoon light fades.

The day begins early, while the savannah is cool and the animals are active.

A morning game drive crosses Queen Elizabeth's open grasslands. Lions are a reliable presence here, and guides track their movements closely. Elephants move through in small family groups.

Buffalo graze in large, calm herds on the flats. Uganda kobs, the slender antelope on the country's coat of arms, appear in almost every direction. A leopard is possible, though not guaranteed, often spotted on a rocky outcrop or in the branches of an acacia.

After breakfast, the vehicle turns south toward Bwindi.

As the morning progresses, the landscape rises. Terraced hillsides in red clay line the road as it narrows through market towns. Bwindi's forest appears on the horizon well before you arrive, a dark, unbroken wall of vegetation across the ridge.

Tonight's base is Ride 4 a Woman Guesthouse near Buhoma, a social enterprise that channels its income directly into programs supporting local women. It is a straightforward, comfortable stay with real community roots.

If time allows on arrival, a visit to a nearby Batwa community is worth taking. The Batwa were displaced from Bwindi when it was gazetted as a national park in 1991.

The cultural programs they now run near Buhoma cover history, music, and traditional forest knowledge. Come with genuine curiosity.

There is no sensible way to prepare someone for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. The forest comes first. It is steep, wet, and heavily rooted, with vegetation so thick in places that rangers cut the trail by hand.

The briefing at park headquarters assigns your group to a specific habituated gorilla family, and the difficulty of the trek depends on where in the forest they spend the night. Then you go.

The encounter, when it comes, is quiet. Mountain gorillas are largely indifferent to the people who have travelled far to see them.

A silverback at rest, watching you with unhurried calm. Juveniles working through the branches above. A mother nursing in the understorey while the rest of the family moves around her. The hour passes quickly.

The afternoon transfer to Lake Bunyonyi brings a change of pace. Sitting at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level and ringed by steep, cultivated hills, the lake is one of Uganda's most distinctive landscapes and one of its deepest bodies of water. A late-afternoon boat cruise around the islands is a calm way to end the day.

Among them is Akampene, known historically as Punishment Island, where young women who became pregnant outside of marriage were abandoned into the mid-twentieth century. Guides share this history directly and without embellishment. It is worth hearing.

The night is spent at Lake Bunyonyi Eco Resort on Kyahugye Island, where zebras and Uganda kobs move freely across the grounds.

The last morning at Lake Bunyonyi moves slowly by design. Mist sits on the water at dawn. By the time breakfast is laid out, the hills above are already alive with birdsong. Then the road north begins.

The drive back to Entebbe takes most of the day. The Equator crossing at Kayabwe is a reliable stop, part novelty and part genuine geographical marker, where guides demonstrate the Coriolis effect with a simple basin of water, and local craft stalls offer decent browsing.

The monument makes for good photographs. A lunch stop breaks the journey further along. The final approach to Entebbe is gradual. If your flight allows time, the lakeshore town is worth a slow walk before the airport.
