This is a necessary pause, offering a sobering and honest look at Rwanda’s past that contextualizes the resilience you see in the people today. After this reflection, the journey shifts northward.

The drive toward the Katuna border is a rhythmic climb through Rwanda’s terraced countryside, where every inch of soil is a patchwork of agriculture.

Crossing into Uganda, the landscape becomes more rugged. The Kigezi Highlands rise to meet you, with winding roads that reveal glimpses of distant volcanoes and deep valleys.

As the afternoon light softens, we reach the fringes of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The air here is noticeably cooler and heavy with the scent of damp earth and thick vegetation.

We settle into the Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge, where the forest wall stands as a silent, formidable neighbor, preparing you for the physical demands of the morning ahead.

The morning starts early, though not with the same urgency as a one-day trip. After breakfast, you head to the park headquarters for a briefing that covers more than rules. It sets expectations. Gorilla trekking is unpredictable. Some groups are found quickly, others require long hours of hiking through dense, uneven terrain.

You’re assigned a gorilla family based on availability and group dynamics, not preference. This is often misunderstood. You don’t choose the gorillas. The system is designed to distribute pressure across families while matching visitor's ability as best as possible.

The trek itself unfolds at the pace of the forest. There are moments of steady climbing, pauses to listen, and stretches where the only sound is movement through vegetation. When the trackers locate the gorillas, the shift is subtle but unmistakable. The forest feels smaller. Focus narrows.

The hour you spend with them is controlled but not staged. A silverback may hold position and watch. Younger gorillas move with curiosity, sometimes ignoring distance guidelines entirely. Rangers manage the space, but the encounter remains unscripted.

After the trek, you return to the lodge briefly before beginning the drive back to Kigali. The return tends to feel lighter, though physically you may be more tired than expected. Arrival is usually in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on border conditions and trekking duration.
